"Ottawa Ukraina prepare for life in Division 1!"

Ottawa Ukraina, are preparing for life in the second highest division in all of Ottawa. They are playing in the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League (OCSL) Men's Competitive Division 1 league. Ukraina have earned the right to play in this league through promotions all the way up from Division 4. This years Division 1, is arguably the toughest, most competitive Division 1 league in many, many years. The league consists of 10 teams - St. Anthony Soccer Club who won the Premier League and the Ontario Cup just a few short years ago, the Ottawa Internationals who are new to division 1 having been relegated from premier, and our Rivals Bosnia to name a few. This league is arguably almost as competitive as the Premier League, which is the highest in the city. Ukraina will have a huge challenge ahead of them to compete weekly against these teams, which the boys are very excited about. If Ottawa Ukraina can compete and play like they can, there is no telling how high they can finish!

"Ottawa Ukraina First Team Preseason Going Well!"

Ottawa Ukraina started their preseason training on March 27th, and things are going very well. The players are showing up in large numbers, and working very hard. The first league game kicks off May 24th, but the players are already getting close to full fitness, and eager for the season to begin. Ukraina have an uphill battle, with losing key players Sergey Kovalenkov, Kenny Porter, Sergey Minko, and losing the Kenny brothers, Matty and Morgan to injury. Morgan Kenny's injury may heal up in time for the season, but Matty Kenny looks to be going under the knife shortly to cure a knee issue. With all that said, other members of the Team are looking to step up in their place, and keep the tradition of winning in the Ottawa Ukraina Club. It is a big season for the likes of Bryce Motiuk and Nate Lafosse who the Club are looking to to provide a ton of offence to the team this season. Upcoming Ukraina have their annual preseseason match against Croatia, and the training and fitness continues !

"Winter Update - Another Trophy!"

Ottawa Ukraina have collected another trophy for their Club in the 2010 Winter Indoor Season at the Louis Riel Dome. Ottawa Ukraina Third Team collected the League Title after finishing top of the League by 1 point. Congratulations to the boys! There isn't much time to rest on laurels, as the spring season for this team has begun, in the same league with some very good new teams in the league. The boys have started with a draw and a win. Good luck! Bring us some more hardware!

The Ottawa Ukraina First Team, after a slow start to the season are finding their feet and starting to put together some wins. They are now in a playoff spot in the league, with 3 games to go. Once in the playoffs, anything is possible, and our boys will give it everything!

The Ottawa Ukraina Second Team, have been having a stop/start season. Winning a game, then losing, then a tie... They can't seem to get consistent results - but with that said, have already clinched a playoff spot and are in good position to make a good run at the title! Good luck to them, they have a real chance! Check the schedule/results link to see how each team is doing game by game!

Bryce Motiuk is taking the League by storm this season scoring 6 goals in 6 games for Ukraina. "Ottawa Ukraina Promoted!!!"

The Ottawa Ukraina First Team have done what they set out to do exactly one year ago - to get promoted to the Competitive First Division in the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League! This is a HUGE acheivement and arguably an achievement one that no other pure ethnic has ever done. Having started in Division 4 in 2006, Ukraina are climbing up the divisions and are now in the second highest league in the entire city! This group of guys really deserves it, and the entire Club is proud of its achievement. Congratulations !

"Ukraina Summer Leagues 2010 start!"

The Ottawa Ukraina First Team, who compete in the OCSL Men's Competitive Division 2 League are fighting valiantly this year, and are in the hunt for promotion! With the top 2 teams getting promoted to division 1, Ukraina see themselves tied in second place, 4 points behind the league leaders. With 4 games remaining, Ukraina have a tough fight to get 1 of the 2 promotion spots, but firmly believe they can achieve their goal!

The Ottawa Ukraina Second Team, who compete in the NCISL Men's Open Division have had a very good season as well, albeit a bit up and down with a mix of results. The season started very well, and because of injury and conflicting game times there have been a few bad results, but regardless of those, there has been some inspirational soccer played and some legendary matches! Ukraina has defeated the first place team, coming back from a 3-0 deficit! The team sits in 4th place, only a few points behind third and second place. With a strong finish to the season Ukraina can see themselves fly up the table! Lets finish strong boys!

"Ottawa Ukraina Soccer Club Winter Season ends in heartbreak!"

Ottawa Ukraina ended the long, grueling winter season with 1 amazing high, and 3 lows. With Ottawa Ukraina 4th Team winning the Championship, we had 3 teams remaining in the playoffs, all who finished no lower then third place after the regular season. First up were the Second Team, who played a hard fought game, but ended up losing in penalty shots in the Quarter Finals. As if it were a deja vu - The Third team had the same outcome, losing a close game in penalty shots. And last night, the might First Team of Ukraina were playing in the quarter finals, and were ahead in the second half, but 2 timely goals from the opposition coupled with a poor referee decision ended the dreams of a third Winter League title in a row for the First Team. Congratulations guys on a successful season, we learned a lot, fought bravely together, and now onto the Spring season, to prepare for the all important Summer season!

"Ukraina 4th Team are Champions!!!"

The Ukraina 4th Team, Captained by Chris Stead, finished their season last night playing in the Championship final and defeating the top ranked Raiders to capture the Championship! Ukraina finished the regular season in 3rd place with a 9 win, 4 loss, 2 tie record and qualified for the playoffs. In the quarter final Ukraina won a very tough test 4-3, and in the semi final won a good battle 3-1. Now in the Championship Final, Ukraina were up against the Raiders - the Achilles heel for all teams. They had not lost in 2 years in this league, and finished this season first with a record of 15 wins and 1 tie. Ukraina, true to their fighting spirit came out fighting and unintimidated and dominated the start of the game. In the 4th minute of the game, Marc Lapointe-Denysewych scored off of a free kick to give Ukraina the lead 1-0. In the 14th minute, Chris Stead took a beautiful corner and Scott Makischuk slotted home his shot in the near post to make it 2-0 Ukraina. In the 21st minute Ukraina struck again, with good combination play from Andriy Panchuk and Max Padalko - who laid off a pass to Scott Makischuk who fired home Ukraina's 3rd to go up 3-0 at halftime. The second half was always going to be tough as the opposition were going to push forward hard, and with 19 minutes to go the opposition scored to make it 3-1. Ukraina were battling still, but gave up another goal with 9 minutes to go to make it 3-2 Ukraina. Then with 6 minutes remaining, Ukraina were awarded a free kick and Marc Lapointe-Denysewych took it quickly seeing Scott Makischuk making a run to the net and Scotty did not fail as he smashed it into the net to give Ukraina a 4-2 lead and win! Walter Usyk was fantastic in goal making some big saves in the game. Congratulations Boys!

"Motiuk On Fire For Ukraina!"

Ukraina 2nd Team having been on a roll lately, sitting in second place in a very tough league in the Ottawa Coliseum. This is largely in part to great committment, fantastic team spirit, and hard work. But another reason is the play of Striker Bryce Motiuk. Bryce has been on fire in front of goal banging in the goals for Ukraina at a frightening pace! Bryce has got 9 goals in his past 3 games, leading Ukraina to victory in all 3 games. That brings his total to 14 goals in 9 games this season leading the team and probably the league. Soccer is a team game, so without the play of his teammates none of this would be possible - as I am sure mild mannered Bryce would say. But his performances have been brilliant, and show no signs of slowing down! Good luck to Bryce and the Ottawa Ukraina Club in the rest of the Winter Seasons!

Ottawa Ukraina Champions of Very Competitive Co-ed Tournament!

Members of the Ottawa Ukraina Soccer Club put together a Team to play in the very competitive Ottawa Sports and Social Club Co-ed Tournament. Co-ed means that every team in the tournament must have 2 females on the field at all times. Ottawa Ukraina recruited 4 females to play in this tournament - one being the Girlfriend of Marc Lapointe-Denysewych, midfielder Erin Johnson and 3 teammates from Erin's current competitive women's team - midfielders Dominic Trudeau, Lisa Della Rosa and Ukrainian goalkeeper Christina Woronowski. This was a first for Ottawa Ukraina, and the tournament was very, very difficult as Ukraina had to face players from premier teams, former University players, current University players and so on.

Ukraina went 4 wins and 1 tie in the Tournament, winning the Championship final 3-2.

Ottawa Ukraina would like to thank the girls for playing in this tournament, and they did extremely well throughout and were a big part in helping the Club win the Championship!

The Ottawa Ukraina Squad who competed in this Tournament were: Mike Herasimenko, Walter Usyk, Andriy Panchuk, Sergey Minko, Sergey Kovalenkov, Eric Lapointe-Denysewych, Andriy Popowych, Marc Lapointe-Denysewych, Arsen Gritsenko, Chris Stead and Scott Makischuk.

Great job and another great win for the Club.

Ottawa Ukraina Expand Once Again, and have 4 Indoor Teams!

OUSC have 4 teams playing this winter in Ottawa. The squad sizes are smaller then an 11 v 11 regular soccer game, as indoor soccer is 7 v 7, but still have over 35 players on the 4 teams! The teams are as follows:

Ottawa Ukraina First Team - Captained By Alex Zaslavsky - which play in the Men's Division 1 League.

Ottawa Ukraina Second Team - Captained By Arsen Gritsenko - which play in the Men's Divison 2 League.

Ottawa Ukraina Third Team - Captained By Nelson Pardo - which play in the Men's Division 3 League.

Ottawa Ukraina Fourth Team - Captained By Chris Stead - which play in the Men's Division 6 league.

This is once again, a monumental time in Ukraina's history, and will be a great winter of battles, blood, sweat, and the occassional beer! Check the schedule link for game times and locations!

Both Ottawa Ukraina First and Second Team Finish Summer Seasons!

The Ottawa Ukraina First and Second Teams finished their respective seasons yesterday. In a historic year, Ottawa Ukraina expanded to have 2 summer teams. It made the process a lot more challenging. Things began on a shaky note, with both teams short on numbers because of injury, as well as the unlucky allocation of both teams playing on the same night, which stretched the coaching staff very thin. But as usual, the Ottawa Ukraina overcame all the obstacles to have very successful seasons! The summer season is seen as the most important, with the leagues working just like professional leagues where teams must start at the bottom rung, and work their way up the leagues (from 4, to 3, to 2, to Premier which is technically division 1) by winning the league they are in (or by finishing in second).

Ottawa Ukraina First Team were playing in division 2, and despite the injury issues, and a bad run of form at one point in the season, were dominant in the last month and a half climbing the standings to finish the season tied for second place!! The unfortunate news is that we finish technically 3rd on goal difference, leaving our promotion status to an application in April, and hopefully we will be successful and get promoted to division 1!!! Great season boys!

Ottawa Ukraina Second Team were playing in Division 3 in the second tier (which is highly competitive) and had a stuttering season, beating top teams, and dropping games to lesser teams on occasion. This team especially suffered through injury and finished a VERY respectable 10th out of 14 teams. I have no doubt in my mind that if the team were healthier and didn't suffer the injuries they did, they would have fought for top 5 easily. It was a great learning season for the players, the coaches and the Club.

Coach Marc Lapointe was over the moon with the 2 teams this summer, and cannot wait for the winter season so he can get more hands-on with the players over the winter so that both teams can challenge for titles next summer! Great job lads, you are a testiment to your team, the Club, and the Ukrainian Community.

Ottawa Ukraina Reserves win first ever game 1-0!

The Ottawa Ukraina reserve team won its first ever game 1-0 in the spring league this season. One may ask how this is Ottawa Ukraina's first reserve team win? The Reserve Teams generally consist of mixture of first team players and reserve team players, giving players a chance to play in 2 leagues, play more often etc. But now that we have over 30 players registered and playing, we have formed an "official reserve" team, with no mixture of players, its it own team, with its own coaching staff and own league. The team is coached by Andriy Panchuk, a first team player and ass't coached by Club Captain Walter Usyk, who also plays for the team. The Ukraina Reserve Team won its opening game in a 9 v 9 indoor Spring league game 1-0 on a goal by co-captain Dmitriy Synak, and Michael Bodnar recorded the shutout. A great way to start the reserve team!

Ottawa Ukraina lose heartbreaker in tournament Finals!

Ukraina participated in a Tournament over the Christmas break, on December 27th. Ukraina beat some solid teams along the way, but came up just a tad short in the end. Ukraina begin working out to prepare for indoor season

Once again the committment by the players and coaches to the success of this team sets a new standard. For the past 3 weeks, players from both the First and Second indoor squads have braved nearly freezing temperatures to begin preparing for the upcoming indoor season. The practices have been relatively light in terms of fitness—they're designed more to get the legs moving and touches on the ball. If the skill level seen at these practices are any indication of what might be on display in the coming season, I wouldn't want to be the opposition.

Ukraina Travel to Belleville for Tournament

For the second straight season Ukraina go to Belleville to compete in a weekend tournament, although this season many players were unable to attend due to injury, prior committments, work among others things but it was decided to go ahead with it and have a good time. Ukraina travelled down with 10 players, Assistant Coach Mario Arnone suited up, as well as guest player, webmaster Peter Furmanczyk who worked hard when on the pitch. Ukraina lost 1 game and tied 2 games over the course of the tournament. It was a great fitness building, team bonding experience, and no doubt about it, with our full squad Ukraina would have walked through this tournament as Champions. The highlight of this tournament was the Father and Son combination up front, Mario and Chris Arnone leading Ukraina's attack!

August 7, 2008

Ukraina Indoor Teams Ready To Begin!

Ukraina have once again begun their long difficult indoor seasons. Ukraina Reserve Team begin their season Wednesday October 5th and play every wednesday until the winner is established in March. The Ukraina First Team will begin their season in Mid November which goes on until a winner is declared in April. We have 2 very very strong teams, with players mixed among both teams, and many players playing for both, we would consider it a failure not to win both League Titles. Here is to a good winter indoor season!

September 02, 2007

Ukraina win promotion to Division 3!

Ukraina Play 100th Match!

On this massive game for Ukraina against promotion rivals Gatineau, marked Ukraina's 100th match since the creation of this Club. It turned out to be a tricky one for Ukraina, as they were missing 9 players due to the league's terrible handling of the league schedule. But with all that said, the boys who turned up at the game were worth of being called Kozak's, as they battled for 90 minutes and earned a 1-1 tie. Out of the first 100 games for the Club, 75 of the games have ended without a loss. This is an amazing statistic and one all Ukrainians involved with this team should be proud of. Here is to the next 100 games, and many many more.

Ukraina make 3 key young signings!

Ottawa Ukraina are shaping up very well for the spring and all important summer season signing 3 youngsters on a permanent basis for the Spring and Summer league. Bryce Motiuk, 21 a midfielder/striker will help our offence with his good skills. Chris Arnone, 21, had played 2 games with Ukraina last year scoring one goal, is also a midfielder/striker who has fantastic energy and pace to burn. Matthew Kenny, 15, may be seen as young on paper, but has been playing with Ukraina as a player this past winter season, but is naturally a keeper. And with Andriy Popowych down with a torn ACL and out for a year, and Morgan Kenny moving to another club this summer, Matthew, brother or Morgan will step into the net. He proved in his debut in goal, that he is a top goalkeeper and will be a massive part in Ukraina's on field success this spring and summer.

Ukraina players making impact in higher leagues!

In the Ottawa Soccer League, there are 5 divisions. Men's premier which is the highest, followed by divisions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Ukraina are currently in Division 4 as all new clubs must start at the lowest league. Teams in higher leagues are allowed to call up players to play with them for a total of 3 games. With the great play of Ukraina, teams in higher leagues have taken notice. Danilo Popowych has made 2 solid appearances for the Ottawa Royals Premier Team who are arguably the best team in and around Ottawa. Scott Makischuk has also played a game with the Ottawa Royals Premier Team. Kenny Porter - Ivanchuk has played games with the Gloucester Hornets team in Division 1 and has played very well. John Udell played 1 game with the Division 3 Ottawa Royals team and dominated the game scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. It is great to see Ukraina flourishing in the soccer community in Ottawa, and hopefully we as a Ukrainian team can achieve premier status in the years to come.
