Summer 2009 Reserve Team

League Game
Ottawa Ukraina Reserve vs. Centennials
Wednesday May 27, 2009 @ 7:15pm
Location: Keith Harris Stadium
Result: 3-0 Win
Game Summary: It was a cold, rainy night as a historic moment was about to happen. The first ever Ukraina Reserve Team took to the pitch under the light of Keith Harris Stadium. The home opener started off terribly with the team encountering pre game registration problems resulting in Myroslav being unable to play, a key defender already out and the game hadn't even started. Once the whistle blew the boys took charge from the beginning putting fourth DOMINATING tackles and hard work rate. The reserves missed a few glorious chances but the hard work and patients paid off when Scott “2hoty” Makischuk gave a through ball to Dmitriy “Dma” Synyak who calmingly slotted it past the keeper. Soon after, 2hoty, shaking off the rust of injury softly buried a partial break away. The boys didn't stop there, the hard work continued. Chris and Igor were like men possessed on the wing, as too were the two central midfielders Dma and Yuriy “Yuuuuura” Derkach. And it paid off, as Yura, who had injured himself earlier going into a vicious challenge manned up and continued to play. He danced through 2 defenders than fired off a low shot that struck the back of the net... 3-0!!! TO THE LADS IN BLUE!!! Defenders Andriy “AZA” Azarov, Walter “Dubs” Usyk, Nelson “Nelly” Pardo, Mike “Pod” Podgorski and Mykhaylo “Myk” Shaforostov all played aggressive and intelligent, that helped Andriy “Popes” Popowych seal the clean sheet! Well Done LADS!!!

Man of the Match

Yuriy Derkach
The whole team played a great game but, Yura however, played one of his best games. He was tough, marked well and scored!

Ukraina only managed to field 8 players with Mike Bodnar stepping in as keeper even when injured, otherwise Ukraina would have had to default the game. Although down 3 men, the boys were in good spirits and gave it their all on the field. Even though under constant pressure, the score remained 0-0 with Mike making some good saves and the defense collapsing to keep it scoreless. But eventually it was impossible to start the constant attack and the half ended 2-0 for the opposition. The boys started the second half trying to get back into the game and had several close calls to get a goal. The constant attack did not subside and Ukraina found themselves down 5-0. Ukraina tried to play a simple counter attack game and Andriy Azarov slotted a nice goal on some good passing to make the game 5-1. But with only 8 players on the pitch the buys were getting tired and the game ended 7-1. Then a few minutes later Yuriy caught the keeper off guard and scored a nice goal to make it 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. Then things started to fall apart in the mid field and the opposition mounted attack after attack but Mike Bodnar made some good saves to keep the game 2-0. Eventually after all the pressure a penalty kick was awarded to the opposition on a very poor call by the referee outside the box. That made the game 2-1 and a little bit of a let down for Ukraina after playing so well. The half ended 2-1.
